The sparkle is for cover, smeared on the edges of her eyes and across her lips. The substance is distracting on her mouth and she kisses him deeper to rid herself of the taste.

You are beautiful, he whispers, but she thinks him a fool for his eager belief in her deception. The trappings she wears are wholly intentional, much like the violence she's always meant; will mean when she breaks his neck.

She thinks too

(and he looks at her as if the females of his past never existed, with their bright colored hair and sweet-smelling skin. I love you, he says into her sweaty skin, and their callused fingers intertwine.)

that if she ever has a need make herself pleasing for someone it will not be by wearing paint on her face. She? scented her hair once to attract attention, only to realize she? had it all along.

This is different, she tells herself, and that was a lifetime ago.

She? playing a role this time; setting aside the soldier for a glittered tralk, and in exchange she completes her mission and he dies with her fa?de still shining in his eyes.

Aeryn scrapes until what? left of her identity is caked beneath her nails, flicks it away with old memories from a former life.
